Summary

One of NPR's Best Books of 2019

A second chance doesn't guarantee a touchdown in this new contemporary romance from the author of Intercepted.

Single mother Poppy Patterson moved across the country when she was 16 and pregnant to find a new normal. After years of hard work, she's built a life she loves. It may include a job at a nightclub, weekend soccer games, and more stretch marks than she anticipated, but it's all hers, and nobody can take that away. Well, except for one person.

TK Moore, the starting wide receiver for the Denver Mustangs, dreamt his entire life about being in the NFL. His world is football, parties, and women. Maybe at one point he thought his future would play out with his high school sweetheart by his side, but Poppy is long gone, and he's moved on.

When Poppy and TK cross paths in the most unlikely of places, emotions they've suppressed for years come rushing back. But with all the secrets they never told each other lying between them, they'll need more than a dating playbook to help them navigate their relationship.

Critic reviews

"Fumbled won my heart all over again. Alexa Martin is so good at this; I’m so impressed by how nuanced and thoughtful this book is, while still being hilarious and sexy! When I finished this book I missed hanging out with Poppy and TK so much. I wish I could jump into the Fumbled world and hang out on the couch and drink wine and gossip with Poppy and her friends!" (Jasmine Guillory, New York Times best-selling author)

“Spending time in Martin’s world is like having a heart-to-heart with your bestie.” (Entertainment Weekly)

Meh....

So, it's kind of hard not to compare this book to Intercepted, which in my opinion was definitely a touchdown. However, I'll give it a try.

Fumbled introduced some new characters and also brought back some old ones from Book 1, which I liked. At the same time, none of the characters and their storylines really wowed me. I also liked the narrator from the first story a bit more. All in all, I mainly got this book because of how good Intercepted was....and while it had some highlights, it had its fumbles as well.

Great Story!!!

I loved T.K.'s character in Intercepted and just LOVED him in this story. I was literally LOL through parts of this book. The narrator really brought this to life! Felt like watching a live Rom Com. Poppy and TK's love story is now my favorite! I can't wait for the next book Blitzed. I'm sure it won't disappoint!!

Disappointing

I loved the first book in the series, Intercepted. It was light-hearted and funny. This one just seemed to take the romantic comedy too far. It was too silly and had giant holes in the plot. It was so unrealistic that Poppy and TK hadn't seen each other in ten years, had a kid together that TK didn't know about, and yet they just continued on like everything was perfect, never bothering to dive into what happened ten years ago or anything deeper than "it was a misunderstanding." Maybe that's just romance, but this seemed more unrealistic than most and it made it hard to view the characters and story as authentic. The additional plot lines seemed superficial and unnecessary, like they were just fluff added to make the story less predictable. Don't get me wrong, if you're looking for a brainless and light-hearted read, this book will fit the bill, and I did laugh out loud a few times, but overall, I was disappointed in the lack of substance.

Good Story

This book was a good read....In fact, I enjoyed this book much better than the first book....this book was able to get the main characters through so many emotions....the main characters TK & Poppy originally were high school sweethearts that had a baby...However, TK knew nothing of the baby...his busybody ass mother intercepted all of the messages and he was unaware until he and Poppy meet up again 10 years later....The couple try to rekindle their relationship....of course there's always someone trying to intervene in the couple's happiness....The book also touch on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is a possibility for TK as an Offensive player....The things I didn't like about the book is the fact that people interfering in the couple's relationship like TK's mother and an old hating co-worker of Poppy didn't really pay for the trouble they caused the couple....the co-worker made it look like Poppy had a stalker and the police was called....What Happen With That? This book really could have been better...there was a lot left unsaid/unspoken....and to me that really made no sense....this audiobook was well over 9 hours...those issues really could have been address.

Touchdown!

I liked that the main character wasn't too strong willed like her last book. I loved how she spotlighted a real-life issue within the confines of the fiction world. Both main characters were well written and the narrator did a great job bringing them to life!

Hard to Finish

The immaturity of the characters did not resonate with me. The narrator did not capture the true voice of the main characters and made it difficult to finish.

Not a story I hate.

The premise of this story is really good. The story itself, though, is unfortunately pretty underwhelming. I agree with what others have said about it seeming a bit far-fetched in its seamlessness; not to say that there had to be a LOT of drama, but the author could have added more challenge in the journey of these characters getting together—particularly in the process of T.K. becoming aware of Poppy’s secret. I appreciate the addition of so many new characters; although I admit I’m sad we don’t get to hear from Marley’s fellow Lady Mustang best friend from the first book, because I would think she’s be around somewhere still.

On another note, I get from this story and the last one on this series that CTE and other brain injuries is a major theme that affects players on this team. That said, it would be nice if the message wasn’t so heavy handed, and wasn’t laid out in such a morbid way; like, can we at least get a championship outta this team before we head so quickly to the dark side of things? I mean, I get this is a real issue, though I hope players’ stories will be less gloomy in the remaining books.

The narrator for this book was okay, though coincidentally wasn’t as good as the last one—and I say coincidentally because I didn’t enjoy the choice of her narrating AT ALL. In this case, my issues with her narration has more to do with her not seeming to be in tune with the conversational flow between characters than whether or not her voice matched the character she was supposed to be. Not that I think she’s a bad narrator—it just seemed like there was a lack of clarity on her part about what was actually happening in each scene, because the tone and phrasing didn’t flow all that well in many parts of the book.

I enjoy Brynn as a character, so I’m looking forward to reading her story next. I hope Donnie makes a reappearance too—that’s my homie! 🤣 All in all, a cute story.

Voice doesn't match characters

Loved the story but the narrator's voice doesn't do the characters justice, especially the main character. Luckily the story was good enough that I pushed through.

Enjoyable but...

I felt like the author got tired of writing or something after giving us so much the firs 3 quarters (pun intended ☺️). The ending could have been so much more climactic compared to book 1. The handling of the female muse was so boring for example.

Narrator is phenomenal
