Summary

Death is a roller coaster.

The traveling carnival has made its stop in Sinful and everyone is ready for thrilling rides, challenging games, and most importantly, funnel cake. But when a man is murdered in the funhouse and Emmaline LeBlanc is knocked unconscious so the killer can escape, the good times are over. Carter is beside himself wanting to hunt down the man responsible for putting his mother in the hospital, but he can’t investigate when he’s related to one of the victims.

Palmer Reed was well known as a boy by most everyone in Sinful for being a sneak, a liar, and sometimes a thief. As an adult, he continued his reign of underachieving and mostly making people angry wherever he went. Now he’s a state police detective and is assigned to the case, but Fortune knows that to get Carter the answers he needs, Swamp Team 3 has to take on the investigation. As they dig deep into the confusion and lies that surround the murder, they uncover a secret that could devastate Carter and Emmaline, but Fortune is determined to discover the truth...whatever that may be.

turn-off

I enjoyed this series until now, but the prejudice with which the protagonists think of a potentially unacknowledged son - before they know anything about him - turned me off. Having lost sympathy for Fortune and her friends I struggled to listen to the rest of the book and will not be downloading any more.

So much fun!!!!

This such a great series!! Fortune is always getting into some kind of trouble it’s great!! If you haven’t listened to this series I would suggest at least listening to book one. This can be listened to as a standalone but if you really want to enjoy it do yourself a favor and listen to the entire series! The antics, sarcasm and humor make this a great fun murder mystery that I was sorry to see come to an end.
Cassandra Campbell does a superb job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Wonderful cozy mystery series

Book 19 of Jana DeLeon's Miss Fortune Mysteries series is superb just just like the first 18 novels. Since the Kindle version was released two months before the audio book I purchased the ebook and read it well before listening to the audio version. The entire support cast is there in Sinful Louisiana with Fortune including her geriatric companions Ida Mae and Gertie and her boyfriend Deputy Carter LeBlanc. There is a murder at the traveling carnival visiting Sinful when a man is stabbed in the back with a large knife and Carter's mother Emmaline LeBlanc is injured going into the coma. Ida Mae's new husband Walter LeBlanc is Emmaline older brother and Carter's uncle.

Fortune Redding is a former CIA assassin while Ida Mae and Gertie are Vietnam era spies and Carter is a former recon Marine. Fortune is now a private detective while the geriatric pair are her "employees". Each of the 19 episodes of this series have been tremendous fun. Keep them coming Jana DeLeon, keep them coming!

Cassandra Campbell narrates the series beautifully.

Okay

I absolutely love the miss fortune series, however this was not one of my favorites. Using Jesus and Jesus Christ as expletives was not necessary and I lost track of the number of times the word dude was used. It wasn’t as laugh out loud funny as previous book, and I felt like the end was rushed. Overall I enjoyed the book, just not as much as previous ones in the series..

Fun, fun, fun.

I enjoy this series. I sometimes listen while biking and get some odd looks when I start laughing out loud.
I know that it can get ridiculous and they never seen to learn that they cannot give Gertie and real job. But it you ignore that, sit back and enjoy, you will have a great time.

Good but Not the Best of the Series

I love this series and listen to it over and over. I enjoyed this new book but it isn't one of the best in the series. It feels like someone else wrote the book; almost formulaic in its use of the characters and plot. I read that Jana is sick. Perhaps she needed some help to get this book out and continue the series. I am so happy this series continues on and will gratefully accept a 4 star book to get more of these wonderful characters! My FAV series! My best wishes for good health to Jana! 🙂

Not my favorite

Though I generally find Fortune, et al's behavior to be a little alarming (especially, Ida Belle's driving, as I needlessly worry about potential fictional bystanders getting hurt) I generally enjoy the characters as fun people trying to do what's right. In this story, they (especially Fortune) were jerks to one of the characters and put them in an ugly light. I guess they thought their behavior was justified but honestly, they didn't have any evidence to treat him that way and it was just mean.

Elementary-school humor harms interesting plot

I am halfway through, and I think I will stop here and never find out who done it. The interesting plot is ruined by un-funny humor mocking body shapes, choice of underwear, clothing and nakedness. (Some characters think that a naked body is the most disgusting thing imaginable.) There is bathroom humor involving a porta-potty. The main character is ex-CIA and scares witnesses into talking by nastily suggesting she will use CIA techniques against them. Violence is in the atmosphere, as when Fortune tells a witness/suspect that if he troubles the injured mother of the sheriff by telling her the truth about her husband, the sheriff will rightfully shoot him. Huh? I just can't bear listening to the unkind banter. i rarely return audio books, but this one is going back.
