Critic reviews

"I wish I'd read it at 25. Or 43. Even now. I found it immensely helpful. So much common sense and wisdom, delivered without judgement. Every home should have one." (Marian Keyes)

"Sali Hughes is a respected voice we all listen to...this book has a little something for every moment, occasion and life event. I loved it." (Giovanna Fletcher)

Judgemental, unfriendly tone

Disappointing. I didn’t feel in the safe hands of a knowledgeable friend - as I think was the intention - but in the hands of someone with very rigid opinions and rather limited life experience.

At its heart is an attitude of ‘I am right, and my readers likely know nothing’. I guess that approach is OK when writing about new beauty releases. I used to love Sali’s Guardian column, but it doesn’t work at all in a life guide.

There are interesting parts, but then she’s off telling us to dry clean brand new clothes, or giving awful advice on serious personal issues. I found the crass advice about IVF almost unlistenable. Then seconds later we’re into how to deal with a badly dressed boyfriend.

Overall I found it patronising and mostly irrelevant.

Very useful advice given by someone who is clearly such a lovely person

Impossible to dislike this book or Sali Hughes. Very thoughtful and covers topics which are seldom broached

Super practical and funny!

I love you can skip through to chapters that are more relevant to you. Even some of the irrelevant chapters were so well written and funny I listened anyway.

Practical, vulnerable, wonderful!

People who really care you don’t just offer advice, they offer practical help. That is what Sali does wonderfully in this book. I wish it had been available when I was in my 20s. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it and recommend it to everyone.

Always good

Excellent and helpful and oh so wise; this book also taught me how to “bookmark” on audible as there are so many key lists I want to go back to!

not all relevant

after listening to all of Sali's other books that are mainly about beauty and beauty products, and loving them, I was very excited to see the release of this book. I'm not sure what I was expecting from it but this wasn't really it. This is a very helpful book and it's interesting to hear her thoughts on so many different topics, although some topics were not relevant to me personally. this may change in the future though so I was happy to hear her opinion on said topics. If you like Sali's style of writing I believe you will enjoy this book.

I’m going to buy a paper copy

I’m going to buy a paper copy and give it to my teenage Daughter, and quite possibly do the same for everyone else I know!

Sali is a lovely writer whom I have followed for years, she speaks with a frankness that is lacking from most and I find it very refreshing. 10/10

Essential and comforting.

I bought the audio book specifically because I was hoping this would feel like a chat with a motherly friend. I was not wrong!

I’ve really enjoyed listening to this whilst cleaning the house and walking the dog. I’ve also found myself taking notes in places and may actually buy the hard copy so I can refer back to really helpful sections.

Some people might have already heard a lot of the advice in this book but there are plenty of helpful tips for people who haven’t necessarily had a lot of handy or self sufficient people in their lives - me!

Thank you Sali!
