Story
With his brother dead, Eddie Richardson feels free to detail the story of a vicious family feud that provoked extravagant acrimony. No Handcuffs unravels the mysteries of decades of crime and political incident. The story of a turbulent era, it rivals the most imaginative fiction in its portrayal of gangland life with all its chanciness and rawness and careless disregard for any obstacle on the way to its target: the big money.

Shay grew up on a tough Manchester council estate where drugs and gangs were rife. A life of crime would have been an easy path to take. So it went against everything that was expected of him when he joined the police. It wouldn't be long before Shay's prodigious talent caught the attention of the top. Then came the call that changed his life: an offer to join the secret level one undercover unit known as Omega. And it was easy to see why they wanted him; he wouldn't have to stray too far from what he already knew.

For more than 20 years, the most intense and prolonged gang war in British history raged on the streets of Manchester. Warring factions left at least 40 dead and made headlines across the world. This best-selling account tells how vicious battles for control of drugs, turf, and protection rackets blighted the reputation of one of Europe's most dynamic cities and saw the coining of the sinister epithet "Gunchester".

The bastard offspring of cocaine, crack first entered the UK in the early 1990s. By the end of the decade, Britain's inner cities were in the midst of a crack epidemic, with users being responsible for a massive proportion of crime. Communities, especially in London, were crying out for help, but there were only two specialist units in the whole of the capital.

Summary
On December 6, 1995, three key members of the infamous Essex Boys gang were lured to a deserted farm track on the pretense of planning a robbery. As the trio sat in their Range Rover, two gunmen approached the open rear door of the vehicle. Moments later, the first shots rang out signaling the start of a swift, yet bloody massacre. When the weapons fell silent, the three men lay dead.
Before the gun smoke had cleared, rumors laced with innuendo and lies had begun circulating throughout the Essex underworld and beyond. Who really killed Tony Tucker, Pat Tate and Craig Rolfe soon became the greatest mystery in British criminal history.
Despite countless books, films, and documentaries pointing accusing fingers at an array of suspects, no clear cut version of events backed by hard evidence has emerged.
That is until now. Within this audio, former key member of the Essex Boys gang Bernard O'Mahoney breaks his silence. He is the man who knows who killed who, why, how, and when. This is his confession. This is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about the Essex Boys murders and so much more.

A good story, but.....
I really enjoyed this book and many others on the subject, but, I wouod approach this book with an air of caution.
The author approaches the story fro his view point obviously but there are other books written (for example by Carlton Leach) that tell a very different story and that Bernard was considerably more guilty than he let's on. Simple fact is we will never know the full truth of that night and that's a shame for the families left behind but still, this book is a very entertaining and engaging story. The performance of the characters is superb I would add.

not sure
I enjoyed the book it's well read and the author captures an atmosphere. However, I can't believe that the author knows so much that it appears he was there. Conversations he knows about are maybe conjecture because there is a lot of tony said or pat said as if they called bernard to tell him things. I'm not trying to insult bernard but still enjoyed the story but one should take it with a pinch of salt.
