Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A poignant, feel-good debut about a man who gives a stranger a harp and inadvertently gives them both a second chance at life....

Meet Ellie. She's perfectly happy living a quiet life with her husband, Clive. (Well, she does sometimes wonder about the way he talks to her and about all the things she hasn't achieved yet. But she's happy enough.)

Meet Dan. He's definitely content - content with his predictable, ordered existence, making harps in his isolated barn on Exmoor. Content being on his own, far away from other people and - crucially - far away from any risk of surprises.

What Ellie and Dan don't know yet is that a chance encounter is about to change all of this....

Average

Well written novel and enjoyed audible characters. Listened after reading another review leaving individual ‘disturbed’ … wouldn’t go that far. Def far fetched and mildly concerning that characters aren’t punished for law breaking but mainly a love story. I would have enjoyed more if more open explanation of disabilities.

Left me very unsettled

This is an easy to listen story in terms of construction. However I was left feeling very uneasy about the storyline. The book deals with very serious issues. It is entirely the author’s choice how to write their story but to not make a very dangerous character accountable for their actions under the law sends totally the wrong message . I think it was an important opportunity missed. I really do not like to write negative comments but the ending of the book left me very disturbed.

It’s alright

Accents can be a tad dodgy but liveable, walked into it having listened to other Prior Books, expecting a light hearted wholesome story, there are some darker themes to it but not anything to worry about. More implied than anything but I do love the character of Dan. Its not going to be a must read classic but then not everything no will and it’s a nice thing to listen to when cleaning or cooking.

Lovely heartwarming story

I loved the idea of the harpmaker, the descriptions of the harps, the woodland, Exmoor. I loved Dan and I thought the narrator was very good. Sadly, I didn’t warm to Ellie so much and thought the narration was a bit lacklustre and the Devon accent was not very good - more Welsh, although I do love a Welsh accent!

Disappointing

I’m quite conflicted about this book. The positive for me was Dan’s character and I thought the author created him quite beautifully and sensitively. I thought Phillip Battley’s narration did the character great justice and brought him to life. The chapters from Ellie’s side of the story however were so naively written it made me wince and I admit to skipping through the nonsense several times. I don’t think I missed much. I would have believed there were two authors conspiring to write one book. The narration of Ellie, by Katharine Lee McEwan was dreadfully dull, which made things worse, with either missing emphasis or emphasis in the wrong place. It was reminiscent of Celia Imrie’s character, Miss Babs in Acorn Antiques!
Not a complete waste of time but I won’t be searching out more from this author in a hurry.
