Summary

In the business of unfinished business....

Tristan Everett has always preferred the company of the dead because they usually don't talk back. Being a somewhat awkward introvert working as a pathologist at the Hackney Public Mortuary suits him just fine. That is, until a freak accident with a rogue ice cube and suddenly he can see ghosts. No longer content to just lie on the table and let him figure out how they died, they're now peering over his shoulder critiquing his work and confessing their most lascivious sins before skipping off merrily into the afterlife.

Just when he thought his life couldn't get any weirder, sassy drag queen, Dusty Le Frey, is wheeled in with a toe tag, and she's not prepared to go quietly into the light. Not only is she furious at the prospect of spending eternity in last season's gold lame, she's determined that he help her solve her murder.

Suddenly Tristan finds himself thrown into a world of sequins and fake eyelashes, and worse still, he may have developed a bit of a crush on Scotland Yard's brand-new drool-worthy detective, Inspector Danny Hayes, who's been assigned to Dusty's murder. Oh, and as the icing on top of a really crappy cake, the killer now wants him dead, too....

All he ever wanted was a simple life but suddenly he's juggling work, a deliciously sexy detective, a stubborn ghost, and a relentless murderer...and things have just gotten dead serious....

From author Wendy Saunders writing as Vawn Cassidy comes this hot and funny, slow-burn, opposites-attract paranormal caper across the East End of London.

Absolutely loved it!!!!

I loved this book when I read it, the audio make its even better. Tristan and Danny made me laugh so many times especially in one bit of the book. This book also made me emotional in places when Tristan meets Dusty's friends. I'm really excited to see where this series goes because the first book was amazing, it drew me in from the first page and I didnt come up till the book was finished.

This book is a delight

First book listened to by Vawn Cassidy, Joel Leslie narrated so it’s almost an auto buy. But wow THIS book stands on its own two spiked heeled legs. Captivating, funny and I swear I though I knew who the murder was about 3 times. 10 out 10 will diffo listen again. Thank you.

She-larious!

A fabulous drag-who-dunnit! Well-written. Loveable characters and moments of filth! Who could ask for more? Well actually I could. I do hope there’s more to come very soon!

Interesting premise badly executed

I liked the sound of this one, but after the first few chapters it started to drag and never picked up again. There's a lot of repetition and redundancy (at one point, one character recounts events we've just witnessed word for word), the romance is a non-starter and there's no mystery to speak of. I liked Tristan and Dusty, but Danny is relegated to the sidelines and has no real personality.

Joel Leslie is great, of course, but he deserves better than this.

I really tried!

I wanted to know how it ends, although the romance stays on the background. I throw in the towel at 70%.
I noticed the author's tendency to drown in detailed descriptions. Her speeches are often unrealisticly long monologs. But I could ignore it. Until she started to state the obvious and repeat facts.
The narrator, lately, has a tendency to slip into a rut that makes listening like the rhythm of train wheels lulling me to sleep. He had good stretches, but combined with boring text it got too much.

Loved it….

Absolute gem of a book, Dusty and Tristan were a fantastic team, Danny was a great love interest and even the cat’s character added to the overall brilliant supporting cast - can’t wait for the next book in this series, I’m now off to read the author’s entire back catalogue

Fun!

Great fun. Murder mystery with a ghostly twist. Usually in stories like this, the person ending up seeing the ghost can’t keep it a secret from their friends/family. This story is unique to me, in that the main character only reveals his ability to see ghosts to one other person (not his love interest). Even though this is a murder mystery with a romance twist, it is fairly light not gritty or dark. The drag queen personalities and the odd-ball way the main character interacts with others make the story fun. The murderer remains a mystery until right near the end. The story isn’t terribly complicated, has fun undertones, has interesting characters, and a plot that moves at a decent pace. There’s no insta-love or ridiculous love at first sight, but a real life-like meet and dating type situation. Cute and fun story with a good plot. Joel Leslie’s narration is fabulous, as always, and makes the characters come alive. You can tell who is talking throughout the story by their different accents.

Happy Accident

Brand new author & PNR trope for me but I love Joel Leslie and the premise sounded good. I absolutely loved this book. It had so many 'feels'...
If you're looking for scorching hot sexy times this probably isn't the book for you, it does have sexy MC's, romance & some heat but it's more about solving a murder & the new skill of seeing 'dead people'. Lots of laughs and a few tears and plenty of sweet & sassy secondary characters.
Joel Leslie was perfect as always.

I NEED MOREEEE

I need so so so much more of these characters. I want like 20 more books of them being my favourite people in existence! 😭 The romance was perfect, the characters were so real & relatable, the mystery was the prefect extra cherry on top, & Joel Leslie once again absolutely kills it with the narration. I loved this book so much more than I thought I would. The synopsis does not do it justice at all.

A Wonderful Surprise ! Highly Recommend

Perhaps it was the cover page that misled me, or maybe that it is a fantasy/paranormal story .. I purchased tha audio because I was in a slump and I enjoy the narrator . HOLY COW I am so glad that I did !

This story is charming and funny and sweet and sexy and thoughtful and just wonderful! The writer really pulled off a perfect romantic paranormal mystery (which is no small feat!). The mystery is engaging without being overwrought AND without being obvious . Tristan is a lonely human but he doesn't wallow in it . Danny is forthright, patient and open. He exhibits masculine qualities that are not toxic or overbearing. He's very sweet . Dusty is a perfect side character (is she tho??!)
The author doesn't rely on miscommunication to drive the plot - they speak openly to one another and that is refreshing.

I actually cried three times during the book but 1. Didn't see it coming and 2. Didn't feel like crawling into bed for a week afterwards. This is absolutely the credit of the writer but more so to the narrator .. who guides the words .... building emotion and then gently bringing the reader back down. He's truly amazing.

But don't get me wrong- I wouldn't even think to describe this book as sad or gut wrenching . The author just presents the correct emotion for the events that occur and doesn't drag you around in it. The book is funny without being ridiculous ,

There is schmexy time (which is very spicy but also very funny and cute) but again .. its not the only thing that happens and is not the main plot point.

Listen to this - the author did an amazing job and it will make your day better

enjoyed it - delightfully entertained

📖 Story comment: Good pace, likeable characters, entertaining plot
I picked this one up purely because its narrated by Joel Leslie and I know regardless of the story I'll be entertained. Vawn Cassidy is an unknown author for me and I was thoroughly delighted. This series has great potential, the characters are interesting, the concept has great scope to be entertaining and it was well written.

I look forward to more of this series in the future.

🎧 Narrator comment: Joel Leslie is a master performer, he brings out every awkward, endearing, funny, suspense and emotional moment of this story. I hope he continues with the rest of this series.

worth the read.

I had a hard time getting into it in the first half but really got into it after that. think its just me then the book. it's a really good book & as always love Joel Leslie the narrator.
I think I'm one of those that like a little more romance in it but I can see it's just enough for others that don't want all romance. I would of just preferred little more then there was. but once it got half way when there was more I started liking it more.

The best crime romance I've listened too.

I love it. The author is so brilliant and creative. I'm usually good at guessing who the murderer is but it threw me through a loop when I found out. Can't wait for the second book.
