Summary

The best assassin in the world doesn’t come cheap. Betraying him will cost your soul.

The Hunter is a name feared by all in Voramis. He is an outcast, driven by a cursed dagger with an unquenchable thirst for blood and death.

Yet he follows one simple code: Kill those who truly deserve to die. His creed is put to the test when, deceived by a shadowy employer, he unknowingly slaughters an innocent man.

With the most powerful criminal organization in the city after his head, the Hunter must fight for his life and find a way to atone for his mistake. When his enemies harm the people under his protection, it will take much more than an army criminals to stand in the way of his revenge.

Can’t get past the narrator.

I want to start by saying that this isn’t a criticism of the author or story, as I could only listen beyond the first 15 minutes.

I’ve listened to many many audio books, but this is the first time where I hear the narrator take a loud intake of breath after just about every sentence. It is so distracting, I couldn’t connect with the story as I started to anticipate the sharp intake of breath.

Really disappointed as the story appealed.

It’s a no from me.

The Hunter, a truly awful name that makes you cringe every time you hear it - though it is marginally better than the name of his talking knife Soul Hunter. He is part James Bond part Elric of Melniboné and isn’t one of the great fantasy figures of our time. It’s a dark, gritty fantasy novel that had/has potential, though it isn’t helped by the narration. I stuck it out until ch.14 at which point The Hunter (cringe), the worlds greatest assassin, fails to spot a whole host of clues that has been ‘set up’ you are left shaking your head realising the main character is an idiot. The Hunter (groan) has one rule he only kills those who deserve to die. Now you would think you would do a bit of research about who your victims would be in this case, but no. He happily just takes the word of whoever is paying him and goes off and stabs them with his talking knife - oh my apparently this one was innocent. Well yes, you’d questioned it several times yourself and the chap you’ve just stabbed gave you enough clues to work out something was iffy, nah I’ll just knife him with Soul Sucker as I’ve been paid. You dullard.

I understand there’s a certain amount of disbelief that needs to be suspended when reading a fantasy novel, but it only goes so far. I still have a problem with talking dragons. Maybe I’m a bit sniffy and maybe it comes across on the written page better than it does as an audio book, but it’s not for me.

Worth a listen

Decent, but strange pacing and what feels like a rushed ending. Will be interested to see what the next entry offers!

A Walking Nightmare.

Wow after read the reading the short story A Life For A Life I knew this was going to epic, A story of assassanic awesomeness, the Hunter of Voramis is no ordinary assassin, a man, demon is just so bloody hard to kill, when you take the part of him that made him feel human, the people he cares about, there will be no hiding place when the Hunter and Soul Hunger coming looking for you, Voramis underworld are about to learn a valuable lesson, but there is a bigger and darker player here that is pulling all the strings, Hunter learns where is demon origins come from and in doing so must use all his humanity that is left inside him to over come the darkness, absolutley brilliant, lots and lots of stabby action, a fantastic grim plot and a very dark setting, when you pick up one Andys books you know that you are going to be highly entertained, the narration for this audio by Marc Vietor is class, his voice was perfect for the Hunter, highly recommend...😁

Introduction

Not bad, found myself increasingly interested on what way the story was going to go.
although a little became a bit predictable.
and think important parts of the holes in the story have been left out. like going back to the priests after the final battle. with the gained information the hunter had found out.
will definitely be trying another installment in hope if answers turn up

Well Started!!

The hardest part of any series is the start. This series sinks into your mind and keeps you guessing till the curtains begin to open on Act 2.

Can't wait for the next book. Love your Fantasy Fiends Podcast as well.

This is a mess

This story was decent enough but throw in an absolutely ridiculously stupid MC and everything just goes downhill. He’s apparently been operating as an assassin for decades in this city and seems to have an established pattern. Not only does he break that pattern to meet someone (for a little more coin) but he takes the job despite all the glaring red flags. Really? Despite even more red flags he goes through with the job and kills an innocent person even though he seemed really proud of the fact that everybody he killed previously deserved it. Then he keeps getting captured because he seems to think like a teenager that he’s invincible and for some reason he loses concentration in the middle of fights. That’s right, he’s been an assassin for decades and loses concentration in the middle of battle. Aaaaaand the worst part is how he seems to think he’s morally superior to his enemies. That being said, I started playing a drinking game with myself every time the MC called someone a “bastard” but had to stop after 30 mins because I was getting too drunk. This story had sooooo much potential but a moronic and childish MC ruined it.

Well...

I don't mind that it was written in omniscient point of view, though it isn't a style I see often--or perhaps its that this one was so poorly executed that it sticks out wretchedly from others... Here's where it faultered: It got just a bit too tiring as the reader is constantly reminded of the lead character's physical struggles; when was he not hurt bad, exhausted or sad? Listen, I like a tormented bad-boy as much as the next gal, maybe moreso, but this guy never caught a break! And on the occasion that he lightened up it was a welcome relief! It just didn't happen often enough. The fight scenes too between the lead and ... well... everyone, were just a bit too drawn out to the point of frustration. Then there was the torture.... given what we knew about the character's mortality, there was no real sense of jeapordy, just a tired reader wondering when it would end.

All that aside, the twist at the end, along with the narrator's good performance, leave me open to sampling the 2nd book in the series. There is a lot of room for improvement and I'm reaaaaally hoping Mr. Peloquin takes advantage of that. Sooner, rather than later. Because I do like me a good tormented lead but I want it done well and not by some prepubescent girl. If I did, I'd read any number of fanfictions and be satisfied.

And with that, I may have just talked myself out of giving book 2 a go. Oh well, maybe time will heal....

Clueless Antihero

main character seems to be skilled. But is completely clueless. Even things that seemed obvious are lost on him. making him completely arrogant one minute and just another dumbass the next. overall it was an okay story. not too much of a struggle to finish

Why I love this book

Here's why I love this book ... it has vomiting, bleeding, bones breaking, horrible smelling people, the stench of garbage and people losing control of their bowels about every 10 minutes. Couple that with a narrator who is acting so furiously, he is in danger of pulling an oblique. Oh, and demons, can't forget about that.

Good story, but a bit predictable

The narrator was quite good. Voices and inflections could have been a bit better, but on the whole he did an excellent job.

As far as the story, I'm rating it a bit higher than I feel it really deserves because a big part of that is personal taste.

The book is very well written, the story keeps moving while offering good character development and world building with very few hiccups in the prose.

That said, the main character seems really cool at first, but the whole amnesiac thing really annoys me.

Now, I understand that his ongoing quest to recover his memories is a (or possibly THE) thing driving the series, but it irks the hell of of me.

I'm all for badass antiheroes with few (if any) morals, but a code best described as complicated. Or even those who really have no code, no morals, and no ethics, and just send up being heroes for selfish reasons. I can get behind all that.

But...

I need to be able to see a reason for why they are the way they are. Telling me "is his nature" just doesn't work for me.

And while it is distinctly possible that we get a lot more of the Hunter's history in later books, right now all I'm getting is, he is the way he is because of what he is. And yet, none of the others are like him. So again I have to ask, why?

It's possible I may pick up the next book or two when they release in audio to see if my questions are answered, but I'm not in any big hurry to do so.

A pretty good story with some nagging flaws

**SLIGHT SPOILERS**
Overall, this was a good listen while doing other things. However, despite his age and experience, the MC makes "dumb" mistakes over and over. For all his skill he just can't figure things out and acts without forethought. That said, the world is quite imaginative and pretty good character development at times. The story was good enough for me to consider listening to the next in the series.
