Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones) reads chilling tales by the unsung master of the classic ghost story: E. F. Benson. There's nothing sinister about a London bus. Nothing supernatural could occur on a busy train platform. There's nothing terrifying about a little caterpillar. And a telephone, what could be scary about that? Don't be frightened of the dark corners of your room. Don't be alarmed by a sudden inexplicable chill.

Story
From New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson comes his first venture into fiction, an otherworldly tale of intrigue and the impossible that marshals his trademark approach to nonfiction to create something new: a ghost story thoroughly grounded in history. Pioneering psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family inexplicably vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world...or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work? Available only on audio, because as Larson says, ghost stories are best told aloud.

Story
The United Kingdom is an ancient land steeped in history and tradition, filled with prehistoric ruins, majestic castles, and a countryside sculpted from millennia of human habitation. Its rolling countryside is dotted with prehistoric burial mounds and stone circles. Medieval churches have elaborate stained glass windows and gruesome carvings, reflecting a mixture of hope and darkness. Every hamlet and village has tales that go back centuries, and folk festivals with roots in pagan times. Thus, it is not surprising that many believe the area is filled with ghosts.

In Haunted Liverpool 34, cult author Tom Slemen documents some strange beings, including faceless terrors, moving statues, real-life vampires, shape-shifting entities, and time-slips. In this audiobook, you will not listen to the usual lame and hackneyed worn-out stories of ghosts; you will listen to original stories concerning the Lost House of Sefton Park, the terrifying visitor to a 24-hour supermarket in the wee small hours who spread terror among the staff with the macabre contents of his holdall.

Perfect for dark nights!
These are newly written ghost stories with deep roots - new classics. Don’t let the title fool you. While all of the stories are set in Cumbria, there is nothing dry or geographical about this book. It isn’t a sightseeing catalog. It’s full of stories that made me add a log to the fire and draw the blinds over the windows.
Cumbria itself is ancient. It’s on the border with Scotland, and was part of Scotland when the Normans invaded. It’s about as far from London as you can get and still be in England today. It’s full of wonderful settings for haunts.
The narrator’s voice is one of my favorite parts of this audiobook. He lives in Cumbria, and has a great ear for dialect. If you haven’t already, go listen to his podcast “Classic Ghost Stories.” I miss his podcast commentary in his books, but I love diving into a whole book of new ghost stories!
If you’re a glutton for ghost stories like I am, anthologies have fewer and fewer new stories for me every year. Fresh written ghost stories, a new supply…. I just want to cackle with glee!
So pull the blinds, build up the fire, make a cup of tea, and then settle back and enjoy this collection of new Ghost Stories set in the ancient land of Cumbria.
PS: “More Cumbrian Ghost Stories” is just out!
