Editor reviews

A young girl is beaten, raped, and stabbed prior to providing a whispered, enigmatic hint identifying her killer and setting in motion another of Crime Writer Association Silver Dagger winner Gwendoline Butler’s masterfully plotted police procedurals featuring Chief Commander John Coffin. Nigel Carrington highlights the increasing tension as anonymous notes threaten vengeance, and first one, then another, and another fall victim to a killer (or killers) ravaging the gentrifying neighborhood of Dockside, London. A family is destroyed. A neighborhood is terrorized and, again, Coffin is forced to struggle to cast light on the darkest shade in the range of human psychology.

Summary

Following the brutal stabbing of a young girl, John Coffin, chief commander of the Docklands district, receives a series of notes from "the Paper Man" promising more bodies if the young girl's killer isn't caught. As the case goes unsolved, more bodies turn up, and now Coffin must find two killers.

Great story set against the backdrop of the London Docklands development

I enjoyed this. It’s a bit convoluted but it really does have the flavour of the mid-late 1980s in terms of attitudes (sadly, toxic ones around homosexuality and HIV/AIDS).
I live in the area so it’s bitter sweet to hear about how local people were swept away in the first capitalist, gentrification of an area. If that sort of thing interests you, it’s an enjoyable listen.

Dated

A reasonable plot and quite enjoyable but, especially with regard to police procedures, now somewhat dated.

Excellent

Wonderful writing. Wonderful performance. To those saying it is dated, it is only dated in the sense that the writing is so very very good. It's been a long time since I've listened to something so well-written.

Good short listen

Good short listen, a bit out of date by today's standards, but it was written a long time ago now. Worth downloading though.

Not great

Drags on a bit, not a punchy or gripping story- not really one for me !
