About this listen

Joining us at Audible Studios is Christy Lefteri, a lecturer of Creative Writing at Brunel University, and the author of The Beekeeper of Aleppo.

The Beekeeper of Aleppo tells the story of Nuri, a beekeeper, and Afra, an artist, who are warmly surrounded by friends and family in the beautiful city of Aleppo in Syria. Their world changes in an instant when war destroys everything they've known and loved and serves them unendurable heartbreak.

In this interview we spoke about Lefteri's experiences in refugee camps in Athens, how these weighed on her, and thus her motivations for writing The Beekeeper of Aleppo. We also spoke about learning about beekeeping, PTSD and asylum.

Great interview

I really enjoyed this short interview. Having read The Beekeeper of Aleppo, it was great to hear what had inspired Christy Lefteri to write this story.
It was obvious listening to her that she had been incredibly moved by her experiences in Athens as a voluteer in the Unicef Refugee camps. There she met numerous traumatised people fleeing from Syria and Afganistan. They had endured a perilous journey to escape the atrocious circumstances occurring in their homeland.
She talked about how she listened to these people and how each were dealing with immeasurable pain and grief in different ways. She found it inspiring that despite the trauma they endured, people managed to find meaning and reason to go on.
Its well worth a listen. She is an author of tremendous integrity and empathy. I look forward to reading another of her books.
