Summary

Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read is the son of a strict Seventh Day Adventist mother and a shell-shocked former soldier who slept with a loaded gun at his side. Bullied at school, he grew up dreaming of revenge ("There are none so merciless as those who have been shown no mercy", as he later noted). He became a criminal legend who terrorised drug dealers, pimps, thieves and armed robbers on the streets and in jail - but boasts he never hurt an innocent member of the public.

This first story of Chopper's memoirs, written from inside jail and laced with his trademark brutal humour, tells the story of his early life of crime - from streetfighter to standover man, gunman to long-term prisoner - and launched his career as a best-selling author.

Irritating Narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The Narrator

Who was your favorite character and why?

Chopper.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator sounds like a children's TV presenter. Hardly the voice of a hardened criminal. There is none of the dry/dark humour that comes through in all of Chopper's books. There is something really creepy about hearing the words "... because the spade was in his brain" coming from someone who sounds like they are wearing a clown costume and reading out loud to a group of primary school kids.

Nice to finally see this on audio

I read a few of the chopper books a few years ago. I'm glad to have listened again. Good narration and really brings the book alive.

brilliant stories from a bad, bad man

I'm very interested in the criminal world, not particularly the Australian criminal world, however this book has changed that, the words of this book let loose a hundred stories of brutality, theft, and justice and they won't be forgotten any time soon

Amusing stories from the criminal underworld.

I love the works of Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read, his "tales" may be embellished a little, but it's hilarious.
If you enjoy true crime mixed with some dark humour, I'd recommend this book and his other works.
The narrator is great, an Australian to keep it authentic and his reading is gripping and great quality.
Top marks for this book!

Very entertaining

What made the experience of listening to Chopper 1 the most enjoyable?

The dark humour

What was one of the most memorable moments of Chopper 1?

Him slagging off underworld godfathers, tells you how they really are. Gutless

Have you listened to any of Dave Ferguson’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No

Any additional comments?

Good humoured read. If you have watched the series underbelly the book touches on some off the characters and tells it from choppers point of view.
I found myself addicted to listening to this on the drive home from work and found myself sitting in my driveway finishing off a chapter.
I have recently purchased the second book hopefully it's just as addictive

A comical nut case

Chopper sounds like a nice chap, just don’t get on his wrong side, drug dealers hide your toes
