Summary

As soon as it was published in 1759, Voltaire's Candide was condemned for its hardly veiled attacks against religion and governments. The plot is a parody of the bildungsroman: Candide and his tutor Pangloss travel around the world convinced that "All is for the best in this, the best of all possible worlds."

Nevertheless, all the experiences and adventures they go through teach them the exact opposite. The reader will not be able to stop laughing at the entertaining account of all their misfortunes. Candide is Voltaire's masterpiece and an acknowledged classic of French literature.
