Summary

DI Jade Tanner has been plunged into managing the Complex Crimes Unit, Police Scotland's newest investigating team. She's recruited Dr. Petra McBride, fresh from losing her job at Dundee University, and DS Mo Uddin, who's reluctantly transferred from Birmingham.

When America's newest internet billionaire is shot on the shores of Loch Lomond, the team is brought in. Jade suspects a connection with the shooting of a local millionaire, an unsolved case that has been haunting her.

But the team has its problems. Jade is only just back at work after a personal trauma and can barely leave her own front drive. Petra is receiving anonymous phone calls and trying to establish a relationship with the latest in a string of girlfriends. And Mo is missing the city and his old boss DI Zoe Finch.

Can the team work together despite their differences and find the killer before the next shooting? Or will the next victim be a member of the Complex Crimes Unit?

Blood and Money is the first in an exciting new series from Rachel McLean, the million-selling author of the prize-winning Dorset Crime series.

Narration let’s this book down

I like Rachel McLean as an author and enjoy her detective stories, but nearly gave up on this one and the only reason I stuck with it is because I’d paid for it!! The narration is awful - so flat and monotone - hard to distinguish between the Scottish characters and the Birmingham and American accents were awful - made me cringe every time they tried. If the narrator doesn’t change I won’t be listening to any more in this series.

Terrible narration ruining a favourite author

I'm an hour into this book and don't know if I can carry on!
I love Rachel's storytelling - I've listened 14 of her books - and I am sure there will be a great tale in here but the narration is so flat, the characters all merge into one. There's none of the richness and distinctiveness of Rachel McLean's other books.

Great story - awful narrator

Love Rachael McLeans books and this new series looks full of promise but the narrator is dreadful! I know most of the characters are Scottish but their attempts at a Birmingham and American accent made my toes curl! I may have to read hard copies of any more as don’t think I could listen to this particular person again

Poor narration

I'm a huge fan of Rachels books, especially in the audiobooks format.
I was really disappointed with this book though.
After listening to the Zoe Finch and Dorset series. Jan Cramer built characters you got to know and love.
In this book the story is flat, Mo Udden is unrecognisable as is Petra.
it would have only been worse if I'd read it myself.
Rachel Mclean, why change a good formula. Bring back Jan for further books.

Bring back Jan Cramer

Sorry, but Lianne's attempts at a 'brummie' accent are pitiful. It's almost impossible to bring forth the image of DS Mo Udden created from Jan's interpretation and after listening to her in the Dorset Crime & Zoe Finch Series', I have to say Lianne just isn't up to scratch, for me. Lianne's take on Dr Petra McBride is ok, but again, Jan is Number 1 for me.
Having said that I enjoyed the story overall and look forward to learning more about the new Characters.

Disappointed with Narrator

I am a fan of Rachel McLean’s previous books, but sadly this one I struggled with due the Narrator trying too hard with the Scottish accents. She made them all highlanders and talked so slow when going into the characters I had to speed it up.
Story was ok and I can see it being a series I will enjoy in future. Just tone it down with the old Scottish laddies and hens comments the characters say which as a Scot myself frustrated me.
Story was good though, and the future relationships will be interesting and hopefully back to the level I am used to with Rachel’s books I have enjoyed in the past.

Terrible narration bring back Jam Cramer

I was looking forward to this story but found the story and narration really hard work. Mo has a completely different accent so couldn’t relate to his character at all. I won’t be wasting a credit on the next book in this series

Try reading this book - don’t listen to it

I’ve enjoyed all of Rachel McLean’s books so far, and was looking forward to a new offshoot series. What a disappointment. The story may well have been good, but the narration was so soporific that I kept zoning out and having to wind back to find out what I’d missed something. In the end I gave up. The Scottish accent was lovely and appropriate for Jade, but all the characters sounded the same which was confusing, especially as Mo Uddin is no longer a Brummie.

Terrible narrator

The story would have been better with a different narrator. She read far too slowly at times & was not very good with accents. Sorry

Monotone narration

I had to stop listening as the narrator was like nails in a chalkboard. Very little fluctuation in voice and really hard to differentiate between characters. I’ve listen to all of DCI Leslie Clarke series and I’ve started the DCI Zoe Finch series, the narrator for those series is 10 times better.

Wish I liked it

Didn't enjoy this narrator. Put the speed to 1.20 and got through it. Normally love Rachel McClean.

Terrible American accents

Ugh, so sad. I love MO, but this narrator was terrible. Her American accents were PAINFUL, and the characters weren't as compelling as usual.
