Summary

The scalpel goes down. The gown is discarded. The chatter stops. Heads turn expectantly.

'Well, Doc, what happened? Have we got a murder on our hands?'

For more than 30 years, bodies have been Dr Marie Cassidy's business. The lucky ones have died peacefully in their own beds, surrounded by loved ones. But that's not always the case.

In her international bestseller, Marie invites us into the world of forensic pathology and her remarkable personal journey, from working-class Glasgow to being Ireland's head pathologist for nearly 15 years.

Involved in the most high-profile cases in the country, Marie shares the intricate processes central to solving modern crime, inviting you to go beyond the tape.

Follow her onto the scene of the crime and walk in her footprints - but don't touch anything.

Remember, every contact leaves a trace . . .

Mouth Noises

promising but couldn't bear the lip smacking noises of the narrator which detracted from what seemed a promising account

Had to return

Just couldn't get into it. Read many of the same subject but this was a bit disjointed. Going from one (very short) case then to something completely different. Back and forth from different times in her life, with no real substance?
No big interesting cases (from the best Pathologist in Ireland, that dealt with all the most infamous cases) Just small titbits from random cases of mostly wife kills husband or husband kills wife, then onto something completely different.
I'm sure some forensic students may gain something from this book, but to be honest, it's pretty boring..

Mostly interresting

For me, the biggest draw back was probably down to the producer/editor(?) or whoever takes care of the spacing between paragraphs. Sometimes the gap is so short it's more suited to a sentence break than a paragraph and I was left going "huh?" until I twigged the subject had changed.
A little bit lacking in places and sometimes felt more like a lecture on processes rather than specific events the author had encountered but overall it was enjoyable enough.

A frank and open look a forensic pathology

Overall the story was great! I liked the detail it went into and the descriptions offered. What I didn’t like were hearing the narrators mouth noises and occasionally lip smacking. Also, it was evident that it was recorded on different devices in different rooms at different times based on the quality of the recording.
I would still rate it but get a sample before you buy in case you can’t abide the mouth noises!

Mouth noises! Disconnect stories, lack of structure.

At first I thought just the narration was poor (lots of saliva smacking mouth noises and lack of pauses between sentences and paragraphs) but I have concluded that this book has no clear structure. It jumps from one tokenistic anecdote to another with no clear flow, and sometimes no relevance. Stories lack detail and I was left with the impression that the author just wanted to sing her own praises!

Not the best

Content was interesting however the reading of the book was this biggest pitfall. Little pauses between paragraphs and almost no intonation left this book hard to listen to. Additionally, there’s a very weird theme where she needs to point out how “little” and “small” she is where she didn’t eat much compared to the rest of the team or all the clothes others lent her were way to big in her small body… very unnecessary.

Fascinatingly Honest

As a great admirer of Dr Cassidy long before the book I was thrilled to hear it in her own voice. A fascinating account of a very interesting life’s work. Honest from start to finish I couldn’t recommend this book more.

Loved it

I was sceptical at first but soon got into it.
I loved the mix of stories and nuggets of wisdom.
I’d be really keen for the next book, if there’s going to be one…

Factual and informative

Once I got used to the narrator (authors) accent then it was an excellent listen.
