From the pioneer of the Science Fiction genre, French author Jules Verne has created a masterpiece of adventure fiction.

Around the World in 8hrs 20 mins

Not only is this a thoroughly enjoyable listen but it works on another level too. Phileas Fogg as the archetypical Englishman comes over initially as a self-centered prig; then you remember that you are getting a view of the English Gentleman through French eyes. Having realised this, I found my interest in the story was that much the greater for it. Poor Detective Fix provides the comic counterpoint to the story (and not Passepartout as is shown in the Mike Todd film). Passepartout himself is treated very sympathetically and in many ways provides the 'glue' that binds the main characters together. The reader adopts just the right tone and pace for the characters and if you are able to forget the film (and in particular, that non-existant balloon flight), this book deserves its eight hours in your audio player.

In the style of its time

The read is precise, dry, dusty, and very much in keeping with the original book... loved every minute!

Narrator was a perfect match to the story

Entertaining story that also reveals interesting details about the world, travel and politics of the times, through the eyes of the main characters.

Delightful quick paced story

I really enjoyed this light hearted novel. As someone else has pointed out, it’s good to understand that this was written from a French viewpoint, so Fogg’s unflustered attitude is part of the parade of the English.

loved it!

One of the best stories told so well by the narrator - whose style takes suits the story well indeed.

Its one book not as good as the film

I've been listening to many of the classics, around the world is one book that fails to excite. There are sections of interest, more to do with the attitude of a writer of the 1900's...

Very entertaining

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Phileas Fogg, the ice-cool Englishman is imperturbable in his rising to the challenge to travel around the World in 80 days, meeting a lot on interesting characters on the way, whilst being unwittingly pursued by a misguided officer from Scotland Yard. His French valet Passepartout offers comedy moments while he protects his single-minded master. It occasionally reads like a travel brochure as the author authenticates the journey with real train times, ferry schedules and the such but on the whole it is a great romp. There is even time for a little romance, although the stalwart protagonist leaves this all till the very last moment!

Great reading of an enjoyable book.

Good for insomniacs...

An excellent story rendered totally unlistenable owing to the fact that it's narrated in a (mono)tone akin to someone reading a statistics text book.

Avoid.
