Summary

As a Doomsday prepper, he's ready to survive the apocalypse. But what about the men hunting him?

It turns out Addison was right: The world as he knew it did come to an end by means of a killer virus.

He’s by himself now, near what was Sicily, Oklahoma, tending to a wilted vegetable garden, foraging for rabbits, and eking out not quite enough water from a dried-up well. It’s time to move. Uncle Izzy, whom he’s decided to seek out in his survivalist cabin hundreds of miles away, had prepared him well for an apocalypse - all but for the loneliness.

The plan is simple. Gun. Bow. Bike. Go.

If he could just make it across the state, then maybe...

But the virus didn’t quite kill everybody. And humanity isn't all that humane anymore.

Ransacked and run-down, Addison learns all too quickly that hope is the enemy and trust is a liability. Survival has its costs.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man might be king, but in the land of the dead, he’s bait.

The literary bleakness of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road meets the survivalist thrills of Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet in this harrowing novel from Joshua V. Scher. Now a motion picture from Shout! Studios and 1157 Productions, out August 17, 2021.

A good start to a series

Kevin Pierce, the narrator has taken a well written story to another level.
I enjoyed this first book in this series, set in a world emptied of people by a disease. it focuses on a young lad trying to find his way in the world.
The characters are realistic, and well thought out, and you follow them as they struggle through relationship issues and getting to know how to relate to each other.
This would have been a 5 star easily, except for the dramatic last scene, well written and brilliantly performed but it just seemed to have a few holes.

reminded me of listening to my crazy uncle

a slow burn story of survival after the (almost) end of humanity.
Kevin Pierce does a wonderful job bringing the story to life, easy to listen to, and remincent of being told stories from an older family member.

perfect for easy.litening while doing other things.

Just no

This was just bad bad bad Kevin did a good Job but that could not save how bad the book is. I don’t do to many reviews but have have over 715 books in my audible library. Half is probably post apocalyptic. Take what you want from my review.

Original

I looked into the author before purchasing. He is a playwright. He is not your typical PA author, so his ideas and formulas are fresh. Dont go into this book with the idea that your getting, "I grabbed my S&W AR with my Vortex 3x sight".
The book is good in my opinion, and I do recommend it, but if you're looking for alot of action it may not be good for you.

Just awful writing

Remember junior high? When you had to write a book report that had to be 500 or a 1000 words? So you add lots of useless words and phrases just to take up space. That's this guy. It feels like he thinks he's adding to the story, adding suspense. No. He's creating boredom. Kevin Pierce does a good job narrating and trying to save this book but falls short. Don't waste your time, credit or money.

one of the best

One of the best books I have listened to in years. Took me a minute to get used to so much first person narration , but learned quickly to love it!

Very enjoyable

I love coming across these microscopic tales of a post apolalyptic world where the “big one” has already happened, so to speak, and we get a glimpse into the fall out from the POV of one person going on surviving.

This is a good story of survival and what it means to to still be human in the aftermath of the destruction after society as we know it ends

I love apocalyptic stories but this was slow & dry

I struggled to stay interested. I keep reminding throughout the story.

I love the narrator, he's one of my faves, but without him, I would have returned the book due to its dryness.

Truly enjoyed

I truly enjoyed the way the author can paint such vivid pictures with his words.
Well written. Flowed nicely. Never a slow spot
