Story
The ultimate summertime story for fans of Jennifer Weiner and Jodi Picoult. Nantucket is only two and a half hours away from Martha's Vineyard by ferry. But the two islands might as well be worlds apart for a set of identical twin sisters who have been at odds for years. Just because twins look exactly the same doesn't mean they're anything alike - and Tabitha and Harper Frost have spent their whole lives trying to prove this point.

Summary
Claire has a problem with setting limits. All her life she has taken on every responsibility, assumed every burden, granted every request. Claire wants it all - and in the eyes of her friends, she has it: A devoted husband, four beautiful children, even a successful career as an artist. So when she agrees to chair the committee for Nantucket's social event of the year, she knows she can handle it. Claire can handle anything.
But when planning the gala propels her into the orbit of billionaire Lock Dixon, unexpected sparks begin to fly. Lock insists on working closely with Claire - often over a bottle of wine - and before long she can't ignore the subtle touches and lingering looks. To her surprise, she can't ignore how they make her feel, either. Claire finds the gala, her life, and herself spinning out of control.
A Summer Affair captures the love, loss, and limbo of an illicit romance and unchecked passion as it takes us on a brave and breathless journey into the heart of one modern woman.
Critic reviews
"She's the perfect wife and mother - and he's the perfect temptation in this "perfect summer cocktail of sex, sun, and scandal". (Kirkus Reviews)
"Think you know where this is going? Think again. Hilderbrand is way too smart to give away the whole story in her title." (Elisabeth Egan, New York Times)

'Gay-lah', 'Gall-a' or 'Gar-la'...
Yes it's all about the pronounciation!
Subjective, I know, but the word appears so often in this book, delivered in an overall tone that makes Andie McDowell seem positively animated and I just can't take it any more. As I say, it's subjective but the voice is SO important to the listening - can make or break the impression of everything else about the book - that, although the storyline is quite intriguing, I can't bring myself to tough it out to the end. Oh, and I agree about the terrible Oirish... Do I need to add that I'll be returning it....?

a long winded affair
This book would have been much better if it were half as long. It was an okay story and the narrator was good, but it seemed to drag on and on. That may have been due to the author's habit of using repeating phrases throughout the story. Overall, just an average listen.

Why not to have an affair! Summer or not!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Only of they were looking for a light read or if deciding whether an affair would be a good idea!
What other book might you compare A Summer Affair to and why?
I can't think of another book to compare it with at this time.
What about Isabel Keating’s performance did you like?
She played her character role very well. In a lot of respects I did not like her but if I could peel her layers of snobbishness away I think there was a good person underneath.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No only because I don't have the time.
Any additional comments?
I found it not one of Elin Hilderbrand's best books. I have almost everyone now so I would put this on the lower end. It it about A Summer Affair and by the time it came to a close it was more about why not to have one. There were sad parts for me; friendships were lost; people were hurt; it became a vicious cycle. I did like the Galla Event and it's purpose. That kept my attention better than the affairs. Again I am not saying it was a bad book but the affairs were too drawn out.

disappointed in story line
The lead character's name in the description is wrong! Get it right. It's not Sheila Crispin Cook; it's Claire Danner Crispin. When reading the description, I didn't see that Claire has an affair. My mistake. Therefore, I was very disappointed, as I believe in fidelity. SPOILER ALERT (so quit reading if you don't want to know) - There were no repercussions, other than her guilt. Sadly, that mirrors real life sometimes. Narrator was great!

A real gem
The characters' are so real. Their inner struggles, emotions, desires and choices bring triumph to some, an undoing for others. A story about how the wrong choices could destroy you and so many others' lives .. or help you evolve into your best self.
