Summary
She needs a champion. He needs one less person to worry about.
Selena Lockhart comes with neither fortune nor connections, and she knows better than to expect society to give her a welcome — especially after her father gambled away his fortune, precipitating the family’s sudden fall from grace and Selena’s betrothed to break off the engagement. It therefore comes as no surprise that her new neighbor, Sir Lucius, treats her with disdain. Why should he look beyond appearances when her own promises so little?
Sir Lucius Clavering is not married, but he may as well be, considering he is expected to escort his widowed mother to watering holes, round out the numbers at his married sister’s dinners, and come to the aid of his scapegrace younger siblings. It doesn’t help that single women and matchmaking mamas jostle each other for his face, fortune, and title so that he’s left without a moment’s peace.
When Selena shows up at Lucius’s doorstep looking for help, he is sure it’s another ploy aimed at cutting up his prized bachelor existence. Although his prejudice does not last long, Lucius fears his first reaction might have ruined his chances with her. How can he save her from society’s teeth when she continues to hold him at arm’s length?

Could have been better
It's a good story if not brilliant but some of the grammar was really clumsy. Period terms and expressions were not always used appropriately. 'Forelock' instead of 'fetlock' was amusing.
The narrator did a good job. I would rate this 3.5 stars.

Stevie Zimmerman is an automatic purchase....
.... for me. If it’s my genre of the moment and the description is even half entertaining I buy it! In this case it was well worth it. No spies or sex or horrible scenes, just a good regency romance narrated by one of my favorites! If you remember it’s a romance and don’t take it too seriously you can’t go wrong here.

Loved it.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. It's squeaky clean, romantic, and interesting. The leading mail character is as masculine as they come and I especially LOVED the ending. I hate how so many books and movies end abruptly, but this is refreshing and fun! I would love to see it made into a movie.

Heroine is horrible!
The heroine in this story is selfish, arrogant and a stuffy snob. There is nothing endearing about her. Horrible story.

Underwhelmed
Usually when there are multiple 5 star reviews and just one negative review I tend to find that I agree with the people who enjoyed the book. I think I am fairly easy to please and not too critical as I love this genre. However, I did not end up liking any of the characters in this book much. I felt like none of them were very endearing and I agree with the review that said the heroine wasn’t likable. The entire book is basically a gentle women turned companion that is constantly negative and surrounded by troublesome negative characters. Nothing lighthearted, flirtatious, funny, or romantic about this book. I usually listen to books over and over but I don’t think I could get through this one again. It does have a happy ending and nice resolution just not worth all the blah to get there.
The narrator however did a great job and was pleasing to listen to.

great clean romance
there's no reason you shouldn't get this audiobook if you enjoy regency clean romance. a swoony hero, a heroine you want to root for, with a good character and a spine, interesting premises for all characters, and the antagonist are not too annoying nor too bland either. there are obstacles for the couple to overcome in order to get together but they are surmountable, and get resolved in realistic enough ways to satisfy me without taking me out of the story for being too unbelievable, or too predictable. I truly enjoyed it and do reccomend it. the story is different enough to not bore you, or giving you a feeling of sameness but not too inventive where you don't get what you came for. the story progressed at a good pace for me, and it wasn't too long nor too short. everything flowed naturally and I'm well satisfied.
the performance was good enough. her male voice sometimes made the hero sound a little old, but it was only for a moment and then went back to normal. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for a woman to imitate a male voice so I never expect perfection in that regard. for me it was done well enough. all the other voices were done really well. all female characters sounded different without having an annoying quality to the sound of their voice. I could been able tell when they were speaking who was who even if the story wouldn't have specified. that was very well done. not too fast nor too slow.

It’s the sudden stop
Lots of interest till the required number of pages goes by, then wrap-up quickly and state The End. No polish, no cliff hanger for a sequel, no high marks for what started as a good storyline.

Sequel
I love following the characters through 3 books. They have become “friends” and I enjoy following their lives.

Love! Not the usual formula-driven story
Loved the story and how the last few chapters went especially. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill romance book. There’s actually a little twist to it.
