Story
It is a hot summer's day in the tourist village of Avebury. A man sits outside the Red Lion pub, waiting. He sees a woman with three young children, two of them running ahead while their sister dawdles behind. A child's voice catches on the breeze. For want of anything more interesting to do, the man watches. He sees nothing sinister or threatening. Even when another figure enters his field of vision, he does not react. The figure is ordinary - male, short-haired, stockily built. But he is moving fast, at a loping run. And then it happens.

They say your memory can't be trusted. They say your story doesn't check out. They say you were never blindfolded...starved...or imprisoned in a filthy shed like an animal. But you know it happened. And you know it can happen again. This masterful novel of brilliantly drawn characters and harrowing suspense will shock you at every turn and force you to walk the fine line between madness and fear. Summary
Joe, struggling to survive in a high-powered law firm, is faced with the challenge of finding his childhood friend, Jenna, who has been missing for four years. But has she disappeared through choice? Or is she under the powerful influence of her husband, the restless, troubled Chetwood?
For Joe, the search is a matter of duty, but also of conscience, for he introduced them to each other; he was enthralled by them both. Helped by his prickly girlfriend, Sarah, Joe manages to find the beautiful, faded Jenna - only to realise too late that he has set some terrible events in motion.
Critic reviews
"A beautifully crafted and engrossing thriller. The plot is both sinuous and surprising, the characterisations true and secure." ( Daily Mail)

A gripping story, and stellar narration
A gripping story, which easily bears repeated listenings. The narration is absolutely perfect; Jeremy Northam never puts a foot wrong. He does not try to act the story, but simply tells it, with no over-dramatisation or tedious voice changes for the different characters, just the subtlest of distinctions which always make it perfectly clear who is speaking. I hope he will continue to read audiobooks for a long time to come.

The story is OK, but not brilliant
What did you like most about A Death Divided?
The narrator - I could listen to anything by Jeremy Northam, in fact I bought this on the strength of him being the narrator. (If you haven't heard him reading 'Our Man in Havana', do yourself a favour and download it.)
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I liked the story at the beginning, but I did get a bit bored by the end. I thought the plot got a bit lost at times. It's enjoyable but not great.
What about Jeremy Northam’s performance did you like?
He is a brilliant narrator.
