警察苦情処理独立団体のローランド・ベニートは、同僚と共に、緊急事態に対応した２人の警察官を取り調べることになる。アパートの一室から騒音がするとの苦情があり、警官が駆けつけると、その部屋に住む刑務官が４階の窓から飛び降り自殺を図っていたのだ。事件性はないと見られた。しかし、刑務官はローランドの孫娘の親友の父親で、脅迫や尾行をされていたこと、さらに刑務所内で受刑者が死亡していたことが明らかになる。自殺でない可能性はあるのか？　そんな中、ＴＶ２東ユトランド局の記者アン・ラーセンも、自殺の真相を追っていた。被告側弁護士の自動車事故死に行き当たったアンは、一連の死が１人の受刑者に結びつくことに気づく。子供殺しのパトリック・アスプ。幼児の娘を殺した罪で、終身刑になった男だ。しかも自殺した刑務官が働いていた刑務所に服役していた。

インゲル・ガルメゴー・マドセン（1960年生）はデンマークの作家である。グラフィックデザイナーとしての経歴を持つ。2008年、犯罪小説「Dukkebarnet」で作家デビュー。その後、犯罪のジャンルで数々の小説を執筆している。代表作は「Drab efter begæring」（2009年）、「Slangers gift」（2014年）、「Dommer og bøddel」（2015年）、「Blodregn」（2016年）
