Luke Messac is an emergency physician and a historian. He is an emergency physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and an Instructor at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on the history and political economy of health care. Luke received his BA from Harvard University, his MD and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, and his residency training in emergency medicine at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital. Luke's first book, No More to Spend, was published by Oxford University Press in 2020. This book is a history of medical neglect and exploitation in Malawi. His second book, Your Money or Your Life, is a history of medical debt collection. This book is under contract with Oxford University Press, and scheduled for publication in Fall 2023. It tells the story of how the collection of medical debt in the United States has transformed over the last several decades, and the impact this is having on Americans’ lives.
