I am the author of Bacterial Genetics and Genomics and I am also involved in educating university students. I have taught at Emory University in the USA and at the University of Oxford, University of Birmingham, and Kingston University in the UK. I have also been a guest lecturer and given seminars at the University of Westminster, University of Warwick, University of Sussex, and University of Oxford. In addition, I am active in outreach activities and public engagement with science events. My research focuses on two main areas: combating antibiotic resistant infections and bacterial genetics and genomics. In 2013, I was awarded the W H Pierce Prize from the Society for Applied Microbiology in recognition of my substantial contributions to the science of applied microbiology due to my work in bacterial genomics. I am an active member of the Microbiology Society and have been twice elected to the Prokaryotic Division committee of the Microbiology Society, as well as serving on the Editorial Board of the journal Microbial Genomics.
