Chris Stuart, born in New Zealand, after graduating as a nurse, spent most of her working life as a humanitarian for organisations such as Red Cross, Oxfam and the UN, in countries where war, disasters and diseases ruined lives and created overwhelming vulnerability. Describing herself as a crime writer with a social conscience, her passion is to make the world a better place, but realises that people like her are only a brick in the wall to making a positive difference. She notes with irony that the happiest people she has come across are the ones who have lost everything and yet are grateful to simply be alive. This crime novel is loosely based on some of her experiences, from learning the ropes in Aboriginal Communities to leading a team into Iraq and her characters are real people she has worked with, respected and loved. October 2021. Won the 2021 NZ Ngaio Marsh award for best debut novel.
