Angela Costello is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and has been working with individuals, couples and families since 1999. She is a contributing publisher on the Insight Timer App where you can listen to her meditations. Have you always wanted to write a children’s book? “I’ve wanted to write all sorts of books. I think every writer gets flooded with ideas. But the inspiration for my kids books series came unexpectedly in an elementary school office on a hectic Fall morning. I was dropping off candy for my daughter’s class, and as all of us parents waited on the side, we watched the tardy kids get signed in by the receptionist. One kid looked like he just got yelled at and was wiping tears from his cheeks. Everyone was desensitized and he just went in to class with the rest of the kids. I asked the receptionist if there’s a counselor on staff or anyone for the children to talk to, and she said the school district doesn’t have funding for that. When I got to my car, I was on the phone with a friend, in tears for that boy and all the kids who have to stick it out on their own, stuff their feelings, and inevitably have them surface in destructive ways later on in their lives. I told my friend that I’ve tried the route of giving talks at PTA meetings and the people who need the messages aren’t in those rooms. So I decided in that moment that I wanted to write stories for kids to hold in their hands and get the messages directly to them that they need to hear about building their self-esteem, and how to safely work through feelings like fear and shame.” Angela has recently published three children's books based on teaching parents and kids how to manage feelings and learn healthy coping tools in a playful storybook format. She also published a non-fiction called Your 5 Superpowers to help inspire people to find inner strength to live their best lives.
