Summary

Doing well with money isn’t necessarily about what you know. It’s about how you behave. And behavior is hard to teach, even to really smart people.

Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together.

In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money and teaches you how to make better sense of one of life’s most important topics.

Great book, Amazing Narrator

Really enjoyed this book. Definitely glad I chose the audio version. The narrator was so easy to listen to and despite some technical points I never felt I lost focus while listening to him read. The book has so many good points and it’s definitely one to listen to again and absorb the points deeper.

Excellent

I listened to this book, then immediately afterwards listened to it again. The first time encouraged me to save the second time encouraged me to stop spending. The narration for me was sublimely well matched.

I loved this book. Ronald Read was a highlight.

I’ve reviewed this book on YouTube and I have to say it’s a great listen. It doesn’t get dry and has great pace for a book on money. The stories Housel includes are fascinating especially the one about Ronald Read. Great advice and not swamped with opinion on how wonderful money is

A Lovely Little Listen

This is a lovely little listen for anyone who likes to think about tomorrow. We all save for that rainy day and we all stress that we might not be making the right decisions with our savings and investments. This book helps you clear away some of the fog and come to the realization that you were right all along and keep going. Morgan Housel is excellent at distilling ideas and presenting them in easy to consume stories.

A good reminder to live within your means

Must admit, I didn't really learn anything new but it was entertaining enough to reinforce some finance fundamentals. For me it was living within your means and being frugal.

Contradictory position

It felt the author has contradictory ideas on the financial system, and I couldn't get a clear conclusion on what he thinks. Maybe I shouldn't have expected it hit it feels from the first chapters that that was going to be the case

Very very informative and interesting perspective

Very fascinating. Every single chapter is like a revelation. I particularly found the chapter on Reasonable > Rational very intruiging.

My 3 key take aways:

1) Whether or not we like to admit it, luck plays a role in your finances.

2) Don't compare yourself to others playing a completely different game. E.g if your not a 6'6 basketball legend, don't try play like Michael Jordan.

3) Human beings value pessimism way more than optimism. E.g You are more likely to believe in a recession that their is going to be a nuclear war that will end humanity rather than the fact that like the other dozens of recessions and even a depression the market not only recovers but returns bountifully if you don't panic and sell.
